Recording in Audacity

Welcome! So you want to start recording your sermons? Audacity is a great place to start in order to get a feel for sound recording and audio production.

NOTE: Make sure you have the newest version of Audacity. It can be downloaded here.

First, set up your sound system to pipe the mixed sound to a 3.5mm cable which you will connect to a laptop or desktop, More information on setting up your sound booth for recording can be found at this article.

Next, start Audacity, and familiarize yourself with the Record, Pause and Stop buttons. Make sure your project quality is at 44100khz, and your MP3 export quality is 32kbytes in the Preferenses.

When you have finished your recording session, you can click the stop button, and then on the Menu, File/Export as Wave..., enter a filename for your sermon. Once the export is complete you can export to MP3 as well. Please follow the following steps from the Audacity site to use LAME with Audacity:

  1. Go to the LAME download page.
  2. Under "For Audacity on Windows", left-click the link "Lame v3.98.2 for Audacity on Windows.exe" and save the file anywhere on your computer. Do not right-click the link to the .exe file.
  3. Double-click "Lame_v3.98.2_for_Audacity_on_Windows.exe" to launch it (you can safely ignore any warnings that the "publisher could not be verified").

  5. The first time you use the "Export as MP3" command, Audacity will ask for the location of "lame_enc.dll". Navigate to "C:\Program Files\Lame for Audacity", select "lame_enc.dll", then click "Open" and "OK".
  6. If you prefer the Zip option for the LAME download, save the zip file to anywhere on your computer, extract "lame_enc.dll" to any location, then show Audacity where to find it as in Step 5 above.
